Is the Runway Model Dying in Second Life?

There was a topic of discussion that piqued my interest today. I know that there are already a few talking about it but I wanted to voice my thoughts on the matter.

I know modeling schools got saturated in SL it’s like everyone wanted their own just like everyone wanted their own club. Everyone wants their own fame in SL. Even among the blogging world everyone is blogging and some are famous and many blog for enjoyment and art reasons.

But i think its been long enough time now that the modeling world can reinvent itself to modern times and on point. Since so many changes have happened over the past 4 years it has been a slow process one would think fashion shows would have moved right along with it. But no.

Now with mesh heads, bodies, hands and feet even eyes and hair… if you have enough L you can be a perfect looking avatar. All you need then is the modeling school to teach manners, etiquette, social skills, walking and flamboyant style.

We need on point, up to date Bento Fashion Model AO’s…. where are they? What is the best modeling school?

To me fashion, art and photography with Photoshop are what make SL fun and interesting. There is so much culture in SL to dive into and the fashion world is truly stunning through designers like Paris Metro Couture and others who have been up there for so long.

Is the Second Life fashion model dying because of modern mesh imporevements? If so, why? Well here is my personal opinion. It’s not meant to down talk anyone only show my thoughts on the matter.

The modeling industry in SL needs to be reinvented since everything is now mesh. I am sad and even more so about fashion shows slowly dying away. The designers that have been around for years since premesh who are still here are struggling and trying so hard and adding in system layers for classic avatars.

Many fashion models from years ago who still model, some of them are unwilling to go full mesh which stunts the possibilities for them to model. The models who are all mesh and up to date and on point in the SL fashion world don’t have fashion shows to participate in and they dont have full mix and match permissions to make the unique one of kind looks the fashion show would require for the runway since most fashions are all mesh and unable to alter.

We need to reinvent the fashion scene to incorporate all new mesh and models need to get brave and make the changes too. SL fashion will not go backwards only forwards. (Whos with me on this?)

Here’s an idea. How about a subscription box for the serious avatar. A box for the fashion model and fashion connoisseur so they can mix and match and put their best foot forward to create and show to the world.

We need new modern day fashion shows to remind everyone of this part of SL. So we all can see some new runway fashions of today. We can mix and mingle with other fashion icons of SL and enjoy the artist community and diverse culture of SL. We can bring back a small taste of what there was years ago….

We need to inspire again.

I know the fashion world is still out there in SL. I know there is the Miss SL pageant and the like still but…. How can we make Runway fashion more mainstream again? SL wants this from all whom I speak to anyway. How do we bring back classy, artistic, unique fashions that people want and will wear? Has SL strayed so far from this that all people want are scabby knees and ghetto street fashion now? I am wrong?

I prefer beauty, sexy, runway fashion. I want more up to date glitter and glitz. I want sparkly diamonds, italian shoes and french influenced garb. Expression of our inner selves is dying to come out and it is stifled by modern day trollop-wear and scabby, bloody tattoos.

OK rant over LOL… here is my inspiration to speak my mind…

thanks for this post, and sharing your opinion and mind.
Very interesting, and there is so much to say about modeling, fashion, the way to show and sell stuff and clothes in SL.
I’m over 10 years in second life, and so i could observer very well all these different changes. Some good, some more painful like you mentiioned it.
But modelling is just one part of the whole thing, and sl changed a lot. All people nearly are blogging now, there are so plenty of events, and news that we may got a bit lost in all this.
Modelling is just a part of the whole fashion-world. There are actually so many events, so many monthly suscribing boxes, so many of all. Most items we get are just used if ever for one picture, then burried in inventory and forgotten. And that’s maybe a bit the bad or sad part.

Unfortunately my english isn’t good enough, i would love to write down so much, but realy i enjoyed reading you, and still good to stop a moment considering the world in which we live and love. 😉

Excellent points, my friend. At one time the fashion modelling industry was very interesting as you could basically make your own original style with clothing layers and sculpties. Even at the beginning of Mesh, this was still possible and I, for one, really appreciated the opportunities that came along in this direction.. There were genuine stars of that era, both designers and models, and it was enjoyable to take part in.

To recreate this atmosphere, things have to move on, as you say. The new Bento mesh heads and bodies can be altered with shapes and skins, it’s even possible to make your own eye colours, so I would say this is the most creative aspect we have seen for a long time – the chance to be original once more but with improved meshes. I really like your idea of a subscription box for the serious fashion connoisseurs and models in the way of separates mix ‘n match and accessories. Not just female but male as well – maybe a combined box. Then the modelling schools need to promote originality once again and help their pupils to stand out – so there needs to be lessons in shape making, adding different hairs together for a new look, making up an outfit that can’t be bought straight off by the consumer. With this new approach, I think the school that first does this will be way ahead of all the rest.
